From now till 2009, the demand for power will increase rapidly and the power supply will not be able to cope with. Therefore, the northern region will lack 660 million kWh in 2007, according to Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).

To resolve the situation, a number of power plants have been built, including the Ca Mau 1 gas turbine project, which will be operational in March 2007 and provide additional 250 MW of electricity to northern areas from October, 2006.

At present, power supplies for the northern region are mainly from the Hoa Binh and Thac Ba hydro-electric power plants and from the Uong Bi, Ninh Binh, Pha Lai and Na Duong thermal power plants which have a total capacity of 3,566 MW.

From now till the end of 2006, the power system in the northern region will be provided with an additional 416 MW sourced from the Cao Ngan and Uong Bi II thermal power plants.
