Four-metre long oarfish discovered in Quang Binh

(VOV) - Local fishermen in central Quang Binh province couldn't believe their eyes when they saw the silvery carcass of a four-metre-long, serpent-like oarfish.

They discovered the fish around 6pm on May 12 in the waters off Trung Trach commune in the Bo Trach district of the province and tried, but to no avail drag the giant sea creature weighing 40kg to shore.

"We've never seen a fish this big,'' said one fisherman. "The last oarfish we saw was only one metre long.''

Because oarfish dive more than 914 metres deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied.

The obscure fish apparently died of natural causes and was buried following local customs of the area.

The fish which is embellished with reddish spots has been known to ‘row’ themselves through the water with its pelvic fins.
