The Central Council for Amnesty Consultation met in Hanoi on August 16 to consider eligible inmates for amnesty on the coming National Day (Sept. 2) and then present their list to the President.

Deputy Public Security Minister Le The Tiem, who is also permanent member of the council, informed the participants of the results of clemency consideration work since the President signed the amnesty. The convicts who are subject to the amnesty have paid VND22.3 billion, of which VND17 billion are additional compensations and VND442 million are court fees, Mr Tiem said.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, who is also president of the Central Council for Amnesty Consultation, hailed the clemency consideration work, which he said, was conducted in a careful, serious, democratic and fair manner.

The deputy PM shared the same view with working groups of not considering clemency for repeat offenders and inmates who were charged with juvenile rape.

Mr Tiem said there will be an additional amnesty in October this year. Those convicts who have met all requirements but have not yet paid their civil responsibility compensation by September 2 will be given this chance.
