National Assembly convenes seventh session

During the 28-day sitting, including panel discussions and inquiry sessions, law-makers are expected to approve 11 draft laws and make the first review of 16 revised laws.

They will also spend time listening to a report on East Sea-related issues by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh. 

In his opening speech, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung raised concern over complicated situations in the East Sea. He noted that China’s placement of its oil rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone has seriously violated Vietnam’s sovereignty.

China’s illegal act has run counter to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and agreements reached by senior leaders of Vietnam and China, thus threatening peace and security, Hung underscored.

Vietnam strongly opposes this act, and the international community has shown keen interest and strong solidarity with the country, he added.

After Hung’s speech, NA deputies heard government reports on socio-economic development plans and State budget in 2013 and first months of 2014.

Chairman of the NA Committee for Economic Affairs Nguyen Van Giau delivered an appraisal report on the government reports on socio-economic development.

A Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) representative also presented a report on voters’ opinions sent to the NA.

During the 7^th session, delegates will discuss a draft resolution on the amendments and supplements to the NA’s Resolution No 35 on votes of confidence on positions elected or approved by the NA or People’s Councils.
