Vietnam ranks second at SEA Games with 63 gold medals

By 14:45 on November 17, the sixth day of the ongoing 26th SEA Games in Indonesia, Vietnam retained its second position with 63 gold, 56 silver and 60 bronze medals.

The host country, Indonesia, topped the medal tally with 93 gold, 69 silver and 72 bronze medals, while Thailand came third with 55 gold, 48 silver and 62 bronze medals.

Fencing: In the women’s team épée event, Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa, Tran Thi Len, Nguyen Thanh Van and Nguyen Thu Hien clinched a gold medal after defeating Indonesian rivals with a 43-37 score.

Swimming: Chau Ba Anh Tu snatched one gold in the men’s 5,000m event. His teammate, Nguyen Thi Bich, also finished first in the women’s 5,000m event, earning one more gold for Vietnam.

Rowing: Tien Huy and Thanh Binh claimed the champion title in the men’s double event, bringing the third gold medal for the Vietnamese rowing team.

Pencak Silat: Vietnam’s first gold medal on November 17 went to athlete Vo Duy Phuong in the men’s 50kg tanding (combat) event. In the final round, Phuong trounced Jul Omar Abdul Hakim with an extended result of 5-0.

In the men’s under 60kg category, Tran Van Hoan also had a convincing victory of 5-0 over Thai athlete Anurak Pakkaranang.

In the women’s event, Nguyen Xuan Huong defeated her rival from the host team to earn a gold medal.

The fourth gold medal for Vietnam’s Pencak Silat team on November 17 was bagged by Nguyen Thi Yen, who won 5-0 over Mariati of the Indonesian squad in the women’s 65kg event.
