Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has appreciated the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its assistance to Vietnam in recent times, especially in making 2006-10 socio-economic development programme.

While receiving IMF First Deputy General Director John Lipsky in Hanoi on September 7, Mr Dung said Vietnam is developing the market economy, accelerating the international economic integration and realising the objective of an equitable, democratic and civilised society. He said in recent years, Vietnam has paid special attention to investing in education, training and sci-tech, considering it a national leading policy.

Mr Dung expressed his hope that with its own efforts and assistance from the international community, including the IMF, Vietnam will realise its set targets, and that Vietnam-IMF relations will further develop after the IMF official's visit.

Mr Lipsky said that the World Trade Organisation's entry will help Vietnam fulfil its targets set for the 2006-20 period. He also affirmed that the IMF will continue to assist Vietnam in its development process.

The IMF official has been in Hanoi for the 13th APEC Finance Ministers' Meeting.
