Inhabitants in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue are able to drink clean water from drinking fountains placed in the Royal palace, pagodas, public places, and recreation centres as of June.

Thua Thien-Hue is the country’s first province that has completed its system of clean water supply for local people under a project being implemented by the Vietnam Association for Water Supply and Draining and the World Health Organization.

The project involves 40 out of 67 water supply and draining companies nationwide.

Nguyen Ton, President of the Association, said his organization is striving to provide clean water to 85 percent of the rural population and 90 percent of city-dwellers by 2010.

The Vietnamese population is expected to reach 100 million in 2024 with more than 40 percent living in urban areas.

According to the WHO, unsafe water causes 80 percent of intestinal diseases in the globe.
