The Ministry of Education and Training on December 19 launched a US$880,000 project entitled "Strategic Development of Literacy Initiative for Empowerment Resource Support System (LIFERSS) in Vietnam" with support from UNESCO.

The 19-month project is aimed at improving the capacity and efficiency of community learning centres, as well as establishing a learning resource system in all 64 provinces and cities of the country. It is expected to help Vietnam achieve its goals of Learning Society and Education for All.

The project is part of the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE) launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Vietnam currently has 7,384 community learning centres, but only one-fourth of them have operated effectively.
