Vietnam will do its utmost to ensure that the Year of APEC 2006 will take place in a convenient and safe way, said Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan, who is also head of the National Committee for APEC 2006.

Speaking at a press briefing in Hanoi on February 15, Mr Khoan noted that Vietnam has won the trust of APEC-member countries and was selected to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in 2006 thanks to the country’s active participation in APEC over the past seven years, thus creating a good image of a dynamic, open, safe and renovated country, which is capable of organising many large international events.

International communities are optimistic about Vietnam’s achievements after 20 years of the renewal process, as well as the country’s economic prospects and stability, he said.

According to the Deputy PM, the hosting of APEC 2006 will bring benefits for co-operation between Vietnam and other APEC-member countries. It will be a good chance for the country to strengthen friendship and expand co-operation with APEC economies at both the bilateral and multilateral levels.

Meanwhile, a seminar on sustainable fishing development in the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation) region was held in Hanoi on February 15, as one of Vietnam’s first activities to begin the year of APEC Vietnam 2006.

The activity was held in response to a statement by APEC ministers on fishing and the oceans with the aim of maximising the economic benefits from sustainable fishing development for the common benefit of all APEC member countries.

Sustainable fishing development will contribute to bringing real benefits for society, ensuring food security and improving the lives of people living in coastal areas.
