Vietnam has broken four regional records in track and field at the 24th Southeast Asian Games that was hosted by Thailand from December 6-15.

Female sprinter Truong Thanh Hang on December 7 became the first athlete to break a record at the Games. Clocked at 4’11’’60 in the 1,500m event, she beat the former record of 4’18’’50 that was set by herself at the last Games held in the Philippines two years ago.

One day later, Hang set a new SEA Games record of 2’2’’39 in the 800m event, breaking the former record of 2’3’’65 set by her teammate Do Thi Bong at the 23rd SEA Games in the Philippines.

In the men’s decathlon event, Vu Van Huyen scored a total of 7,457 points to beat the 10-year record of 7,316 points set by David Yimsumruay from Thailand at the 19th Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1997. Huyen ranked first in six events, namely high jump, 400m race, pole jump, 1,500m race, discus-throwing and 110m hurdle race to set the new record.

Nguyen Dinh Cuong wrapped up Vietnam’s chain of successes in track and field at SEA Games 24 by a new record of 3’45’’31 in the men’s 1,500m event. The former record of 3’47”28 was set by Singapore’s Sigerar Perluatan 14 years ago.
