Australian businesses want to continue investing in Vietnam in lucrative sectors such as mining, finance and services, say Australian officials.

National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong met with Deputy Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory of Canberra Katy Gallagher and Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Stephen Smith on March 13.

At the meeting, the Australian officials expressed their pleasure at Mr Trong’s visit, which takes place at a time when both countries are celebrating the 35th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties.

They appreciated Vietnam’s development and the contribution made by overseas Vietnamese in Australia.

They said the recent cultural festival of overseas Vietnamese in Australia captured the attention of Australian people. The number of Vietnamese tourists to Australia has increased sharply in recent years.

According to Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, Australian investors want to continue investing in Vietnam, especially in the mining, finance and service sectors. Both Australian hosts also expressed their wish to visit Vietnam soon in order to witness its development achievements.

Established in 1913, Canberra with a population of over 320,000 is a multicultural city inhabited by different ethnic groups and home to a large Vietnamese community.

For his part, Mr Trong hailed Australia’s achievements as well as those recorded by Canberra and thanked the Australian parliamentary and municipal leaders for their warm welcome.

Vietnam is deepening its international integration and its achievements are partly attributed to Australia’s assistance, especially in the areas of economics, trade, tourism, science and education, Mr Trong said.

Being accompanied by 70 Vietnamese entrepreneurs, Mr Trong hoped that the two countries will continue to create the best possible conditions for their enterprises to boost business cooperation.

The Vietnamese NA leader wished to welcome Katy Gallagher and Stephen Smith to Hanoi at the earliest possible time.

In the afternoon, NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong and his entourage arrived in Sydney, continuing their tour of Australia.
