The National Fund for Vietnamese Children plans to raise about VND23 billion (US$1.4 million) from domestic and foreign agencies, organisations and individuals to assist disadvantaged children this year.

The fund will cover surgery for 4,000 disabled children, grant 3,000 scholarships to children from poor families, and build a number of kindergartens, entertainment sites for children and clean water projects. The fund will also provide emergency aid to children in natural disaster-hit areas.

Last year, the fund allocated more than VND29 billion (US$1.8 million), to support 50,000 disabled children.

In addition, the fund's chapters nationwide collected some VND100 billion (US$6.25 million) to help nearly 2 million children with special needs and effectively carry out projects at the community level under the National Action Plan for Children in the 2001-2005 period.
