The spread of blue ear pig disease is threatening central provinces.

*** After detecting blue ear pig disease in the two communes of Dien Nguyen and Dien Quang in Dien Chau district, central Nghe An province on April 6 and 7, the province has mobilised forces to control the disease. More than 80 litres of chemicals and five tonnes of powered lime have been sent to the communes to sterilise the environment and 240 pigs have been culled. The province will pay pig breeders up to VND20,000 compensation for one kilogram of each live pig. It has also banned transportation of pig products and quarantined high risk areas to prevent the spread of the disease.

*** Leaders of central Ha Tinh province have held an urgent meeting with officials from 12 districts and towns to devise measures to curb the spread of blue ear pig disease. Authorities have encouraged farmers to voluntarily implement preventive measures, and destroy pigs infected with the disease. By April 7, blue ear had occurred in the Dai Nai ward of Ha Tinh City and Thuan Loc commune in Can Loc district, and three other communes in Thach Ha district, bringing the total number of affected areas to 40 communes and four wards with nearly 10,000 pigs contracting the disease.

*** The Animal Health Department in Central Quang Ngai province has worked with localities to provide information about blue ear pig disease and bird flu in order to detect and curb outbreaks in time. The provincial veterinary department provided 1,000 litres of chemicals to sterilize the area and vaccinated new poultry. The province has established check points in Doc Soi on the Binh Son highway to control the transportation of pigs and birds. Currently, the province has more than 50,000 buffaloes, nearly 288,000 cows, over 520,000 pigs and more than 2.5 million birds.
