Thai Army Chief and Chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS) Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin has ordered the Fourth Army Region Commander, Lt. Gen. Viroj Buacharoon, to draft a long-term plan to counter and stop the ongoing violence in Thailand 's southernmost provinces.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Montri Sangkhasap was quoted by the Thai News Agency (TNA) as saying that Sonthi asked Gen. Viroj to complete the draft plan for restoration of peace in the southern region.

The plan will include the adjustment of strategies and the increase of patrol missions and security measures to ensure the safety of Buddhist communities, teachers and students, Mr Montri added.

He stressed that village volunteers will have an expanded role in ensuring the safety of their own communities, and that the military would only provide supplementary forces. Adjustments to the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) are expected to be completed this week, he added.
