Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) has broadcast a programme on Hoi An - a central ancient town of Vietnam - and its local people’s daily lives.

The programme, featuring Hoi An town, which bustles by day and is silent by night, aims to help Japanese people gain a better understanding of Vietnamese cultural heritage and customs. It shows the beauty of Hoi An with ancient streets full of handicrafts such as lanterns and embroidered pictures which are made by skillful artisans.

The daily lives of local people are also portrayed with girls weaving in traditional white long dress (Ao Dai) in the streets and crowded markets.

The programme also introduces a bridge, which was built by the Japanese in the 16th century.

In recent years, cultural exchanges between Vietnam and Japan have been developing and more and more Japanese people have come to visit Vietnam. In 2006, Vietnam received around 38,000 Japanese visitors and is expected to welcome around 500,000 Japanese visitors by 2010.
