Eleven local and foreign volleyball teams began the first games of the International Women's Volleyball Tournament in HCM City on May 12.

The teams have been divided into two groups for the round robin stage of the tournament, also known as the VTV Cup, which is being held at the Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium.

In group A, Vietnam will vie with the Philippines, Myanmar, Beijing Air-Communications University and Japan's Shikoku. Meanwhile, VTV Binh Dien Long An, St John's University from the US, Beijing Finance University, Kazakhstan's Zetyssu, Banimiwittaya from Thailand and Sri Lanka will compete in group B.

The semi-finals are scheduled for May 18, with the finals to be played the next day.

The tournament presents an opportunity for Vietnamese players to gain experience in preparation for the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December.

Last year, China's Sichuan took home the cup after beating Vietnam 3-2 in the finals. China's Nankai was placed third.
