Continued poultry smuggling in northern and southern border provinces is posing the threat of a possible recurrence of avian influenza outbreak in poultry and humans, said Deputy Health Minister Trinh Quan Huan.

He told a meeting of the National Steering Board for Bird Flu Control in Hanoi on April 12 that the H5N1 virus was found in smuggled poultry following the results of tests. He asked localities, particularly border provinces, to intensify control measures to stop poultry smuggling and prevent the spread of the virus to humans.

According to Mr Huan, the Health Ministry is providing bird flu control facilities to all localities and holding training courses for local officials.
