The export price of 5 percent broken rice from both Vietnam and Thailand is expected to stay at around US$900 per tonne in the near future, according to the Trade and Business Information Centre (TBIC), under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Although Cambodia has decided not to ban rice exports, its total volume of exported rice won’t exceed 400,000 tonnes this year to have much effect on the export price of rice in Asia.

In any case, the supply of rice will be tightened since exports from the world’s top five exporting countries will be reduced by 10 percent this year to 22.7 million tonnes the lowest level since 2003.

Meanwhile, demand for rice on the world market is still high. Malaysia has announced that it is planning to buy Vietnamese rice for its national reserve. Moreover, how much it needs is not yet specified.

Vietnam has exported over 1.82 million tonnes of rice so far this year, earning nearly US$850 million. In the domestic market, 5 percent broken rice is currently trading at VND9,500-9,700 per kilogram.
