Vietnam is ready to host the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2008 in Hanoi from July 20-29, a government official said on July 7.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Banh Tien Long delivered the remarks at a working session with the authorities of northeastern Quang Ninh province, which will host a conference of the World Federation of Physics Competitions (WFPhC) during the event.

With its Ha Long Bay twice recognised as a world heritage site by UNESCO, Quang Ninh will welcome participating students and delegates on July 25 and 26.

Mr. Long said this is the first time Vietnam hosts an IPhO, proving the nation’s growing position and prestige in the international arena.

Unlike other IPhOs, Vietnam is responsible for putting forward theoretical and practical questions.

More than 500 talented students and another 500 teachers and educators from 85 countries and territories around the world will take part in this year’s IPhO, making it the largest event in terms of participating nations.

Students and local peers will participate in exchange programmes with a number of Physics Nobel prize winners in the world.
