Vietnam highlights UN Charter’s significance in maintaining peace

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, has highlighted the UN Charter’s significance in maintaining international peace and security and called on the agency’s bodies to uphold the Charter’s purpose and principles.

“The severity and complexity of these challenges require a determined approach from the United Nations, particularly its main organs including the General Assembly, the Security Council and the ECOSOC, in upholding the purposes and principles of the Charter, Nga said at the Open Debate of the Security Council on "Respect for the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations as a key element for the maintenance of international peace and security" in New York on February 15.

Special attention must be paid to the respect for the unique nature of each nation in terms of history, culture, politics and economics, she affirmed.

According to the Ambassador, the UN must further promote and assist member states in utilising the applicable means specified in Article 33 of the Charter in the settlement of disputes, while deepening its relationship with regional and sub-regional organisations, which play a significant role in settling these disputes.

It is also essential to mobilise resources and develop capabilities for UN peacekeeping operations to ensure its readiness, efficiency and effectiveness, she said.

She emphasised ASEAN solidarity in building a regional architecture conducive to stability and prosperity, as well as addressing regional security challenges through political and security advancements in ASEAN Community.

Vietnam is working with partners to develop tools for conflict prevention and peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with the purpose and principles of the UN Charter, she stressed.
