This was announced by Dr Rajendra K Pachauri, Chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at a press conference before the international seminar on climate change and extreme weather phenomena co-organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) opened in Hanoi on August 17.
Pachauri said as the extreme weather phenomena affects people’s health and agricultural production, plan makers need to draw up strategies and policies to minimize risks.
He said the Vietnamese Government, especially the Prime Minister, is focusing on issues related to climate change adaptation. Besides, the Vietnamese people are dynamic and can easily adapt to severe situations. One of models that countries should learn about Vietnam is to rely on the power of people in society.
Pachauri proposed to Vietnam a number of measures, such as building warning systems and improving water control, agricultural production and urban planning.
He emphasized the need to reduce poverty among the poor as they will be most affected by climate change due to their lack of scientific and technological know-how.
Associate professor Dr Tran Thuc, Rector of the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Science, said the most difficulty Vietnam is facing limited cooperation among agencies, poor knowledge about climate change, scientific and technological advances and financial management.
