The 4th ASEAN Para Games opened on January 20 in Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima with the participation of over 1,000 disabled athletes from Southeast Asian countries.

Athletes will compete for 935 sets of medals in athletics, badminton, chess, goal ball, judo, power lifting, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, archery, boccia, fencing and shooting.


Vietnam, with 117 disable athletes, is the third largest delegation to the games after the host Thailand and Malaysia. Vietnam’s athletes hope to win 65 gold medals at the end of the Games on January 27.


Disabled athletes competing at the biennial event are coming from Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.


The first ASEAN Para Games was held in Malaysia in 2001, the next two games were held in Vietnam and the Philippines in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
