The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has developed a programme targeting 2.5 million Vietnamese children in the next five years.

The beneficiaries include 150,000 orphans, 1.2 million disabled children, 23,000 children living on their own, 13,000 juvenile offenders, and 263,000 others with HIV-positive parents.

The programme, in co-operation with the Vietnam Committee for Population, Family and Children, will assist the Vietnamese Government in ensuring a safe environment for all children and adolescents and providing them with proper care.

The programme proceeds from the 2001-2005 child care project that assisted the Vietnamese Government in making laws and policies on child protection, raising capacity and awareness of the problems, and building models to resolve them.
