Vietnamese taekwondo martial artist Nguyen Thanh Thao won a ticket to the first Youth Olympics Games by finishing third at the third at the World Teakwondo Federation (WTF) qualification at Tijuana, Mexico.

Thao scored four wins in the women’s 55kg category for 41 martial artists.

She beat Emmelly Cartagnea of Puerto Rico 2-1 in the opening bout and Francini Vasquez of Croatia in the second.

She went on to thrash Charlotte Brown of Canada 9-3 and defeat American Selina Copersmith 5-3 before losing to Mexico’s Monica Chavez Rivera in the semi-final.

Thao will be Vietnam’s sole taekwondo contestant at the inaugural games which will be held in Singapore from August 14-26.
