The Canadian embassy on May 5 announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the governments of Canada and Vietnam relating to a US$15 million project on Provincial-level Environmental Governance in Vietnam.

The project highlights Canada’s commitments to improving the management capacity of enterprises that deal with industrial pollution in Vietnam.

The Canadian ambassador to Vietnam, Gabriel M.Lessard said that the project is essential for Vietnam as the country aims to become an industrialized nation by 2020.

He also expressed hope that through the project, Canada will be able to help Vietnam reduce the environmental costs of the industrialisation process, support environmental management, and implement and subsequent legislation.

The project, which is financed by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for five years (2008-2013), will be carried out in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ha Tay, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, Quang Ngai, Binh Duong, Long An and Soc Trang provinces.
