Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has instructed the Vietnamese Embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to actively promote cooperation between Vietnam and the Arabian nation, especially in areas with potential such as investment, trade, labour, tourism, education and training.

PM Dung, who began a three-day visit to the UAE on February 15, delegated the task to the embassy’s officials and staff during a meeting later that evening.

He said that the UAE is potentially a big economic market for Vietnam with two-way trade in 2008 hitting US$500 million, double the previous year’s figure. It is also an attractive labour market and currently nearly 15,000 Vietnamese nationals are working there under labour contracts.

He said that during his visit this time, the two countries are expected to sign a number of agreements on diplomatic, trade and labour cooperation, including an agreement on double tax avoidance.

He also asked the embassy to keep a close watch on the living conditions of Vietnamese guest workers and protect their interests.

Later, he met with the chief executive officers of the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) and the Tamouh real estate developer, who spoke about the prospects of boosting cooperation with Vietnamese partners in oil and real estate.
