Farmers aim for stronger growth

(VOV) -The Vietnam Farmers’ Union (VNFU) has admitted more than 2 million new members, bringing its total membership to more than 10 million, 4.4 percent higher in than the previous term.

The sixth national congress of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union (VNFU) themed “Solidarity, renovation, activeness, integration and sustainable growth” opened in Hanoi on July 1.

The congress reviewed activities in the previous term (2008-2013) and worked out orientations and targets for the union’s programs and farmers’ patriotic emulation movements in the next period (2013-2018).

In his speech, Chairman of the VNFU’ Central Committee Nguyen Quoc Cuong spoke highly of the union’s remarkable achievements in boosting agricultural production and building new rural areas.

The Union has always encouraged coordinated efforts by all farmers to overcome difficulties and challenges, increase their personal incomes and gradually improve their living standards, Cuong said.

The focus of the next term will be on properly implementing Resolution 26 adopted at the Party Committee’s 7 session (10th tenure) on agriculture, farmers and rural development and the national target program on building new rural areas.

Addressing the congress, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong called on the Union to fully grasp the guidelines in the 11th National Party Congress’ resolution and the socio-economic development strategy in order to bring Party policies and State laws to life.

The Union needs to protect farmers’ legitimate rights and interests and create favourable conditions for them to apply advanced technologies in the process of developing agriculture and building new rural areas, Trong said.

The congress also discussed practical measures to improve VNFU’s role in developing agriculture and building Vietnam’s peasant class in the 2010-2020 period.
