An exhibition featuring the history and development of Chinese characters opened in Hanoi on September 25 to mark the 57th National Day of the People's Republic of China (October 1).

Eighty-four photos, restored objects and a model of a study room, focusing on the origin of Chinese characters, their formation, evolution and calligraphy including Chinese characters on computers, are on display at the exhibition.

Ancient Chinese characters used to be inscribed on tortoise shells and animal bones. The characters were developed during the Shang Dynasty, the second Chinese dynasty chronologically, more than 3,000 years ago.

The exhibition will last through October 5.
