Hanoi grants amnesty to prisoners ahead of Tet

(VOV) - The capital city has decided to commute penalty and grant amnesty to 230 inmates on the occasion of the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Under the January 22 decision signed by the Hanoi Amnesty Advisory Council, 57 prisoners are set to be freed and 173 others will have their terms reduced by one to eight months.

At the amnesty ceremony at Detention Camp No 1, Major General Dinh Van Toan, Vice Director of the Hanoi Public Security Department, congratulated eligible prisoners on parole and expressed his hope that other inmates will continue to rehabilitate and re-educate to earn amnesty next time.

He urged the detention camp to take care of prisoners and encourage them to work hard and reunite with their families one day.

Colonel Bui Ngoc Binh, head of Detention Camp No 1, said the appraisal process has been conducted in a democratic, open and lawful manner. Those awarded amnesty this time are prisoners with light sentences and those who have demonstrated good behaviour and rehabilitative potential.
