After churning through China’s Hainan islands, tropical storm Higos, the 8th of its kind in the East Sea this year, weakened into a tropical depression on October 4 and changed its course towards China’s mainland.

In the next 24 hours, the tropical depression, with winds gusting to 49kph near its centre, is forecast to sweep ashore in the south-western part of China’s Guangdong province and then weaken further, according to the Central Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre. However, on its way, it will cause heavy rains and strong whirlwinds in the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf.

Meanwhile, a cold snap is expected to bring rains to the northern and north-central provinces when it hits northern border provinces late on October 4. Temperatures will drop by 5-7oC.
