The international media has shared the same view that the Vietnamese State President Nguyen Minh Triet's visit to the US is of historic significance and marks the development of relations since the two countries normalized bilateral relations.

Japanese newspaper Sankei on June 18 said that during the first visit of the Vietnamese State leader, the two sides are expected to sign framework agreements on investment and trade with the aim of boosting bilateral economic relations.

Meanwhile, Radio Australia broadcast that as the first Vietnamese State leader to visit the US since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, he is expected to sign trade agreements with the US in the fields of energy, finance, technology, information technology and communications. Radio Australia also quoted a Vietnamese foreign official as saying that the visit will help to strengthen relations between the two countries.

According to Thai newspapers, the visit is of historic significance despite divergence in politics and religious freedom between the two countries sometimes but it will help strengthen diplomatic and economic relations. Many investment and trade framework agreements are expected to be signed.

Chinese Xinhua Agency quoted local analysts as saying that Mr Triet's visit has three main purposes: first, beefing up bilateral economic and trade cooperation, second, speeding up the process of solving issues left by the war, including local victims of Agent Orange, and narrowing some differences, especially those related to democracy and human rights, and third, continuing to call for the Vietnamese community in the United States to better understand the situation in Vietnam, not conducting activities which are contrary to its interest, and to make stronger contributions to its development.
