Canadian PM Justin Trudeau welcomed in Hanoi
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hosted a welcoming ceremony on the afternoon of November 8 in Hanoi for his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, who is on an official visit to Vietnam.
The visit takes place at a time when Vietnam – Canada relations are growing robustly. The two countries have maintained high-ranking exchange visits and strengthened cooperation in political diplomacy, economic trade, and education and training. |

This is the first time Justin Trudeau has visited Vietnam as the Canadian Prime Minister. |
Vietnam and Canada established diplomatic ties in 1973, and signed a letter of intent on increasing bilateral relations in 2014. Two years later, the two countries agreed to foster cooperation in seven fields mentioned in the letter of intent, focusing on trade-investment and education-training. |
In terms of security and defence, both countries have engaged in delegation exchanges, cooperation at international and regional forums, military and English training, anti-terrorism, humanitarian aid and immigration. |
The two countries have also strengthened cooperation and connectivity between localities such as Ha Tinh with Langley, Ho Chi Minh City with Toronto, and Da Nang with Vancouver. |
Soon after the welcoming ceremony, the two Prime Ministers hold talks and a joint press conference. |
After talks with Prime Minister Phuc, Mr. Trudeau meets with Party, State, and Government leaders to discuss measures to advance a comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Canada in the future. |
Vietnam is the largest trade partner of Canada in ASEAN. |

Mr. Trudeau is the second Canadian PM to have visited Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1973. |

On November 9, Mr. Trudeau will fly to Ho Chi Minh City to attend a round-table meeting at the HCM City Stock Exchange. His itinerary in HCM includes meetings with students of Ton Duc Thang University and the Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong. On November 10, he will attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Da Nang. |
Mr Trudeau, 45, is the 23rd Canadian Prime Minister, and the second youngest Canadian PM after Joe Clark. |
