Developing a certification system from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in Vietnam was the main theme of a conference held in Ho Chi Minh City on March 9.

At the seminar, experts from the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) and the MSC briefed participants on requirements and application procedures for the MSC certificate.

Delegates also collected figures and information about fisheries in the northern and central regions of Vietnam to apply for the MSC certificate, and discussed activities to steer fisheries towards sustainable development in Vietnam.

Oyster and anchovy fishermen in southern Ben Tre province and on Phu Quoc island are keen to apply for the MSC certificate.

The conference was hosted by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) in collaboration with the WWF and the Vietnam Institute of Fisheries Economics and Planning (VIFEP).
