In the first five months of this year Vietnam earned US$375 million from the export of 221,000 tonnes of rubber, marking an annual increase of 43 percent.

The growth was mainly driven by improved techniques adopted by the rubber companies, which have been equipped with advanced production lines and in-house quality control facilities of an international standard.

Vietnam is now home to over 70 rubber companies with production capacities ranging between 500-20,000 tonnes per year.

In 2005, the country exported 587,000 tonnes of rubber, netting a profit of US$804 million. This figure brought the country to the fourth rank amongst the world's largest rubber exporters after Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Major importers of rubber from Vietnam include China, the Republic of Korea, Germany, Russia and the US.

Rubber is currently the country's second largest export farm staple after rice. In 2005, the country's total rubber area under cultivation reached 478,700ha.
