The living conditions of the elderly, both material and spiritual, have improved considerably over the past years thanks to concerted efforts of the whole society, said Nguyen Thi Than, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly at a conference held in Hanoi on March 16 to review the care programme for the elderly during the 2001-2005 period.

"Taking care of both the spiritual and material lives of the elderly is the main focus of the Associations of the Elderly across the country," Ms Nhan noted

Over the past years, the Party and the State have prioritised policies and activities aimed at improving living conditions for the old.
Many organisations and individuals in localities across the country have spared no effort to involve the elderly in community life by organising various cultural and entertainment activities, including sight-seeing tours, fitness activities and art performances.

The participation of the elderly in helping their families promote businesses, reduce poverty and educate grandchildren also brings them happiness.

To date, the Associations of the Elderly have been established in almost all cities and provinces nationwide, drawing the involvement of 7.5 million people in total.v
