Vietnam exported US$2.34 billion worth of seafood products in the first seven months of this year, an increase of 17.7 percent over the same period last year, according to a report from the General Statistics Office.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) said seafood exports are expected to reach US$4.2 billion this year, including US$1.5 billion from shrimp exports alone.

Seafood exports to Russia have increased sharply over recent months and Vietnam currently ranks 4th among the largest seafood exporters to the market, following Norway, China and Denmark, said VASEP spokesman Nguyen Minh Tam, adding that in the first half of this year, Vietnam exported 47,384 tonnes of seafood, earning US$85.14 million.

Mr Tam also emphasised that in June VASEP signed a five-year agreement with the Russian Association of Seafood Traders and Processors with the aim of developing business strategies between the two associations and links between seafood enterprises of both countries, and further co-operating to improve the quality of Vietnamese seafood to meet international standards.
