Germany supports Mekong Delta’s climate change adaptation
(VOV) - Germany will provide more official development assistance (ODA) for climate change, energy and environment programmes in Vietnam, particularly the Mekong Delta region, in the future.
HCM City-based German Consult General Hans Dieter Stell made the commitment at a meeting with Can Tho leaders on April 3.
Over the past nearly 40 years, the two countries have achieved significant progress in climate change adaptation, energy development and environmental matters, he said, adding all German ODA projects in the Mekong Delta region have reaped tremendous benefits.
He specifically mentioned the EUR200 million O Mon Thermal Power Plant and a EUR26 million waste water treatment project as primary examples of successful projects.

An ecosystem restoration programme in Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, An Giang and Kien Giang provinces is also instrumental in raising local people’s awareness of the importance of environment protection and had a great positive impact on the ecosystem.
Hans revealed that in late April, a German parliamentarian group will spend two working days in the Mekong Delta region to address the means and methods of improving the effectiveness of its sea dyke system.
This will be a great project for Vietnam to request more technical and ODA financial assistance from the German Government, he said.
Le Hung Dung, Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee, said he hopes more German businesses will come to Vietnam to seek cooperation opportunities.
He expressed his desire that in addition to climate change adaptation, Germany will pay more attention to healthcare cooperation with Vietnam, including supplying equipment and machinery to the National Paediatrics Hospital.
