Nearly 200 international scholars, legal experts, East Sea researchers and diplomats gathered in Hanoi on November 4 for the third international workshop on the East Sea.

The workshop was co-organised by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) and the Vietnam Lawyers Association.

In his opening speech, DAV President Dang Dinh Quy analysed the situation in the East Sea, which he said is becoming more and more complicated due to economic, political, military, and security changes in the region.

Quy put this down to disputes over territorial waters and islands, nontraditional security issues such as armed piracy, sea environment pollution, and exhaustion of maritime resources, and climate change.

This requires closer cooperation among concerned parties and the international community.

Developments in the East Sea as well as the maintenance of peace, stability, and development in the region have been officially discussed in the spirit of respect for international laws and in a transparent way for the benefit of concerned parties and the international community.

The two-day conference, themed “The East Sea: Cooperation for Regional Security and Development” will include eight sessions related to different issues.

The results of the conference will lay a firm foundation for the governments of concerned parties to cooperate effectively in controlling and solving the ongoing disputes in the East Sea.
