More than 19,000 Vietnamese labourers were recruited to work abroad in the first quarter of this year, according to the Overseas Labour Management Department under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA).

Most of these labourers are working in Vietnam’s traditional labour markets: 3,974 in Taiwan, 8,766 in Malaysia, 918 in Japan, 1,863 in the Republic of Korea and 1,909 in Qatar.

Meanwhile, other labour markets like the Middle East and North Africa also pick up, having received 8,775 Vietnamese guest workers by March 2007. Of the figure, about 4,000 labourers are working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 3,000 in Qatar, 1,000 in Libya, 500 in Saudi Arabia, and 200 in Algeria.

The Prime Minister has allowed the MoLISA to expand Vietnam’s labour market to Saudi Arabia.

Many Vietnamese skilled labourers are expected to work in such demanding markets as the US and Canada to get better payment.
