The coming round of multilateral negotiations on Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will officially start in Geneva, Switzerland on July 19.

Director of the International Law Department under the Justice Ministry Hoang Phuoc Hiep said this round of multilateral negotiations is considered the final step for Vietnam to join the world’s largest economic body.

During negotiations, Vietnam will finalise the working party’s report and sum up bilateral commitments to add to its final dossier. After that, there will be a technical meeting followed by a plenary meeting to vote for Vietnam’s WTO status in November 2006, Mr Hiep said.

Meanwhile, on July 2, head of the US-Vietnam Trade Council (USVTC) Virginia Foote said that the first hearing on approving Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status for Vietnam will be held at the US Senate Financial Committee on July 12.

During the hearing, the US Senate Financial Committee will consider Bill S.3495, which was co-sponsored by eight US Senators and submitted to the US Congress on June 13.
