Vietnam ready to send policemen to UN missions

VOV.VN - Vietnam is actively preparing to dispatch its policemen to UN peacekeeping missions, said Lieut. Gen. Tran Van Ve, Acting General Director of the General Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, at the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) in New York on June 21.

More than 30 Vietnamese military officers have participated in peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and the Central African Republic and Vietnam is currently joining hands with the international community to overcome consequences of conflicts in the world, Tran Van Ve.

The country highly appreciates the UNCOPS mechanism and believes that it will optimise values of UN police forces, helping to ensure peace, deal with security challenges, and double efforts in protecting social order in national and UN scales.

Vietnam strongly supports the UNCOPS  mechanism, which contributes to reinforcing partnership and sharing information and experience among member countries and partners, he said.

The situation of organized and trans-national crimes in the world and the region is becoming more complicated with different forms, including drug-related crimes, weapon and human trafficking, money laundry, international economic crimes and high-technology crimes.

These are big challenges to law enforcement forces in all countries across the globe Vietnam in particular, Ve noted.

In order to cope with the challenges, Vietnam has worked closely with police forces of other countries, delivering certain cooperation results which have been acknowledged and applauded by the international community.
To further  improve the operational efficiency of the UN police force, the Vietnamese official suggested stronger collaboration between the force and existing police mechanisms such as Interpol, Europol and ASEANPOL with the aim of sharing information and boosting closer coordination in operations.

The member countries need to intensify the sharing of resources and information with the UN police force to increase their assistance in building and improving capacity for police who become involved in UN peace keeping operations.

The United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit drew the participation of police chiefs from 193 UN member countries.
