Vietnam has spent US$24 million on HIV/AIDS control activities in the 2001-2005 period, focusing on launching dissemination campaigns to change public behaviours, reducing HIV infections from mother to child, caring and providing consultancy services for HIV/AIDS carriers.

In the period from 2001-07, the Government has also received US$185 million in aid from international agencies, foreign Governments and non-Governmental organisations for the fight against HIV/AIDS in 50 of the 64 cities and provinces across the country.

In addition to State budget allocations, localities have spent part of their budgets implementing support policies for people infected with HIV/AIDS, particularly children at home and social support centres.

Thanks to these efforts, Vietnam has initially curbed the spread of HIV/AIDS and minimised the epidemic’s consequences on society, especially children.

According to Huynh Thi Nhan, Vice Minister of Finance, Vietnam will try to mobilise investment capital sources for the national action plan on HIV/AIDS control up to 2010 and the Vision 2020 strategy. In addition, she said, efforts will be made to mobilise the entire society and local communities to take care of disadvantaged children, especially those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

"Vietnam is looking for stronger financial support from the international community for the fight,” said Ms Nhan.
