More than 81 percent of the land of central Quang Tri province is still threaten by mines and explosive devices left over from the previous war in Vietnam, according to the provincial Military Command.

Of around 310,000ha, the most seriously effected areas include Dakrong, Huong Hoa, Vinh Linh, Gio Linh and Hai Lang districts.

As the remaining mines can unexpectedly cause accidents, the province is carrying out the first phase (2008-2010) of a project to clear the mines in an area of 3,600ha at a cost of over VND92 billion.

According to Colonel Le Manh Hung, Head of the provincial Engineer Corps, the total cost of the project is estimated at thousands of billions of VND.
