Deputy Minister Vuong emphasised this at a seminar entitled “Vietnam-Japan: Smart Community”, which was jointly held by the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and the Japanese Ministry of Economics, Trade, and Industry (METI) on August 11.
The “smart community” advocates an intelligent electricity network, with advanced technology, to create a two-way interaction between electricity suppliers and consumers. As well as this the project is designed to develop smart infrastructure including traffic systems, water supplies, and renewable energy supplies to help improve energy efficiency and deal with the impact of climate change, he said.
Yoshinao Ogawa, Director of the International Affairs Office under the METI’s Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Department, said there should be favourable policies and capital resources from official development assistance (ODA), from the government and the private sector.
He said the Japanese government will provide Vietnam with technical assistance and businesses’ activities through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).
The main focus of the project will be based on populous areas such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Ogawa added.
The “Smart Community” is aimed at applying advanced technologies to control the use of energy and to connect different networks of energy supplies with traffic and waste water treatment systems in order to maintain a convenient lifestyle for local people.
Vietnam’s energy efficiency ranks low against the rest of the world, with Electricity-GDP elasticity remaining high at 2.0.
