Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the US Christopher Hill paid a courtesy visit to State President Nguyen Minh Triet in Hanoi on May 23.

Mr Hill briefed his host on the purpose of his current Asian tour and measures to strengthen Vietnam-US relations in the coming time. He expressed his delight at the recent considerable progress in bilateral relations, considering it a good chance for the two sides to further strengthen ties in various areas.

He said the US is expecting the coming visit to the US by Mr Triet and believed that the visit would bring bilateral ties to a new height.

The diplomatic agencies of the two countries are making preparations for the visit to ensure its success, said Mr Hill.

Mr Triet spoke highly of the continued development of the relations between Vietnam and the US, particularly after the official visit to Vietnam by President George W. Bush and the US’s approval of permanent normal trade relations status with Vietnam.

He said that both countries should take further steps towards maintaining the growing trends in bilateral relations and adopt new measures to further develop bilateral ties. The two countries should hold more exchanges and dialogues to resolve differences based on the constructive spirit, mutual respect and understanding.

Early in the morning, Mr Hill met with Minister and Chairman of the Government Office Doan Manh Giao and held working sessions with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Van Bang.
