Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has stressed on the need to retain the state of emergency to maintain peace and law and order in the country despite demands by many organisations to revoke the special law.

The National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT) on June 13 quoted the prime minister as saying that the government is responsible for maintaining peace and stability, and the situation still merits a state of emergency. He personally believes that many people would be at risk if another rally was held.

This was also the reason why all forms of the media ranging from print, radio, television, to the internet need to be regulated, said the Prime Minister.

According to NNT, many organisations, including the National Human Rights Commission, and Amnesty International, as well as the opposition Puea Thai Party, have been requesting the Thai government to end the state of emergency due to concerns over human rights.

The PM said that the requests from those organisations reflected their viewpoint but the Thai government must perform its duty.
