As the Mid-Autumn festival is coming, traditional foods like Moon cakes, are off the shelf everywhere, especially in urban areas.

Moon cake producers such as Kinh Do, Hanoi, Dong Khanh, Hai Ha, and Bibica, offer a wide range of products, 10-20 percent higher in price compared to last year’s festival. In addition to popular cakes sold in Thai Ha, Lang Ha, and Nguyen Trai streets, customers can buy the best ones with prices reaching some million dong in Trang Tien, Ba Trieu, Ly Thai To, and Hang Than streets.

According to many shop assistants, the prices of Moon cakes depend on both quality and trademark.

A box of four normal cakes is usually sold at VND200,000 while the special ones, which often go with bird’s nest and imported wine, may fetch up to VND3,000,000.

Many kinds of cakes are said to be made of rare materials such as ginseng, fomes japonicus, sea cucumber, and bird’s nest. Whether it’s true or not depends on the taste of customers.

Up-market products are provided by big manufacturers such as Kinh Do, Bibica, Huu Nghi, Hong Ha, and five-star restaurants and hotels.

The appearance of such expensive products make people think the Mid-autumn festival is not only for children, but also for adults who like to buy them for other purposes.

Associate Professor Vo Quang Trung, Director of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, says the socioeconomic development has changed the traditional significance of the Mid-Autumn festival.
