More than 2.7 million Lao voters on April 30 cast their ballots at 5,454 polling stations nationwide to elect deputies to the sixth National Assembly.

Speaking at constituency No9, Chummaly Saynhason, General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, praised the National Election Commission and relevant agencies for their efforts to ensure the election took place on schedule. He said the new National Assembly will take on heavy tasks, including those to overseeing the Government’s operations, particularly in the fight against bureaucracy and corruption. 

Meanwhile, answering domestic and foreign reporters’ questions, Chairman of the Lao National Assembly Saman Vinhaket said the election is the continuation in the process of strengthening and perfecting the Lao political system.

A total of 175 candidates, including 40 women, run for the 115-member parliament, which is due to meet on May 8 or 9 to elect a new Government.
