The Maternity Hospital in the northern port city of Hai Phong successfully conducted two surgical operations on April 7 and 8, bringing into the world four babies conceived by in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).

These births are two out of the first five IVF cases conducted by the hospital.

The first twins, who weighed 3 kg and 2.8 kg at birth, were delivered after 38 weeks of gestation while the other twins, weighing 2.7 kg and 2 kg, after 37 weeks.

The hospital is currently caring for another 36-week IVF twin pregnancy.

Dr. Do Thi Thu Thuy, Vice Director of the hospital, said the hospital has conducted 36 IVFs since July 2005. It plans to perform additional 14 IVFs from now through the end of 2006. (VOVNews/VNA)
