ABG5: Vietnam leads medal table after first competition day

Vietnamese athletes won three gold, four silver and 11 bronze medals on the first day of competition at the fifth Asian Beach Games (ABG 5) in the central city of Danang, helping the host country lead the medal tally.

The first gold medal was won by Phan Thi Phuong in the women’s Fairway single event of Beach Woodball. In the final match, Phuong beat her teammate Nguyen Huyen Trang 3-0.

This is an improvement from Phuong’s achievement two years ago when she got a silver in the fourth ABG, which took place in Phuket, Thailand.

Vietnam also had a bronze medal in Woodball by Nguyen Hong Quan, making it the best team in the sports, followed by Thailand and Indonesia.

The country’s two other gold medals were won by Hoang Thi Tinh in the women’s 48kg and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy in the women’s 52kg of Kurash.
